Student Exchange Online Email Upgrade FAQ

As part of our integration with Office 365, Information Technology Services (ITS) will be upgrading all Pace Exchange student email accounts to Exchange Online. This upgrade will provide students with an increased email quota of 50GB, while also improving the look and feel of the interface.

Why is my email account being upgraded?
Our Exchange version is reaching its end-of-life and will stop being supported by Microsoft. Thus moving to Exchange Online and integrating email accounts with Office 365 will guarantee that the vendor continues to provide necessary support and security updates. In addition, upgrading will increase the space quota for your email account, so you’ll be able to store more content (email messages, appointments, contacts, tasks) without reaching your maximum limit.
Will I have access to my email account during the upgrade?
Yes. You will still be able to log in and send/receive emails, schedule appointments, and save/edit contacts and tasks, with only a short interruption overnight when your login is switched from the old system to the new system.
Will all my content be moved over to the new Exchange Online account?
Yes. All emails, appointments, contacts, inbox rules and blocked/safe senders in the account should be migrated with 100% fidelity.
Will my space quota increase once my account is upgraded?
Yes. Account quota will increase to 50GB.
When are the account upgrades being done?

We plan to begin upgrading student email accounts starting Wednesday, July 14th. However, due to the high number of accounts to be upgraded, it will take at 1-2 months to complete the upgrade. Any individual account upgrade may happen at the beginning, middle, or end of that upgrade period. See next question for individual timeframes.

How will the upgrade process work for my account?

Once the upgrade process starts for each email account, it should take 1-2 days, but can take longer to complete (depending on account size) and will include all saved email messages, calendar appointments, contacts, tasks, as well as any existing inbox rules and saved blocked/safe senders.

During your upgrade period, you will receive 3 separate emails from accountprovisioning@pace.edu, as listed below, to inform you of your account’s upgrade status:

  • Email Notification 1: When your account upgrade begins, you’ll receive an email from accountprovisioning@pace.edu with an estimated timeframe for the process to be completed.  You do not need to do anything at this time and will still be able to log in and send/receive emails, schedule appointments, and save/edit contacts and tasks, without any interruption.
  • Email Notification 2: After your upgrade is completed and all content has been successfully migrated to your new Exchange Online email account, you will receive a second email fromaccountprovisioning@pace.edu to inform you that your login access will be switched to the new site at http://outlook.com/owa/pace.edu.  Since the cutover requires a temporary disconnection of your email account, this part of the process will be completed during the overnight hours to minimize any disruption.
  • Email Notification 3: Email Notification 3: The morning after the switch occurs, you will receive a third and final email in your new Exchange Online inbox to confirm that your upgrade has been completed. To access your upgraded email/calendar account and all your content, please log in at http://outlook.com/owa/pace.edu with your full Pace email address (e.g. jd12345n@pace.edu), your MyPace password, and your Duo Multifactor Authentication (MFA) passcode.
What will be the new web address (URL) to log in to Exchange Online?

The new web address is http://outlook.com/owa/pace.edu and you will log in with your full Pace email address (e.g. jd12345n@pace.edu), your MyPace password, and your Duo Multifactor Authentication (MFA) passcode.

Can I still access my email/calendar via Email.Pace.Edu after the upgrade?

No. After your account is upgraded, if you try to log in via https://email.pace.edu you will encounter a message stating that your account has been moved to the new Exchange Online location and the new website link (URL) will display. Just click on it to access your upgraded email account and all content.
Note: Some students may get a “mailbox not found” error message when logging in at https://email.pace.edu. If you get this, please clear your browser cookies/cache and try again, or log in to Exchange Online directly at http://outlook.com/owa/pace.edu.

Why do I need to use Duo Multifactor Authentication (MFA) to log in to my Exchange Online email account?

Exchange Online is integrated with Pace University’s Office 365 subscription, which already requires the use of Duo Multifactor Authentication (MFA). Thus, students will be prompted for their Duo MFA passcode when they log in to their email account on Exchange Online. For more information about Duo MFA, and to enroll, please review the Duo Multifactor Authentication article.

Do I need to re-create my Pace email account on my mobile device (e.g. phone, tablet)?

Yes. If you have your Pace student email account set up on your mobile device, you will need to delete and re-create it. When re-creating your account you may be asked to select either Office 365 or Exchange. If so, please select Office 365. To log in, just enter your full Pace email address (e.g. jd12345n@pace.edu), your MyPace password, and your Duo Multifactor Authentication (MFA) passcode (see previous question about the need for Duo MFA).

Can I continue to use my smartphone’s native email app for Pace email after the upgrade?

That depends on whether your native email app contains the modern security protocols required for Duo Multifactor Authentication (MFA). Since there are so many different email apps available, it is difficult to test and determine which ones will work with Duo MFA. Please note that Exchange Online works best with the Outlook Mobile app, which you can download from the Apple iOS or Google Play (Android) app store. Microsoft recommends Outlook Mobile for the best experience.

What will happen to my email forwarding settings?

Existing email forwarding will be removed as part of the upgrade and move to Exchange Online. Students can go to https://adam.pace.edu after the upgrade is completed and enable forwarding again.

I use the MS Outlook Client on my desktop. Do I need to do anything?
Those who use the MS Outlook desktop client (version 2016 or later) on Windows and Mac will get a message to restart the application once the upgrade is completed. However, you do not need to re-configure any settings and all content will appear as before.
Will my older version of MS Outlook be supported in Exchange Online?

No. Unfortunately, any version older than Outlook 2016 cannot be supported.

Where do new Pace students access their email account?

Starting Friday, July 9th, all new student accounts will be created in the new Exchange Online system at http://outlook.com/owa/pace.edu. Any new students who go to email.pace.edu will get a message stating that their account is in Exchange Online and the correct site link will display.
